KC Chiefs Training Camp

1b67490c86dd4e91ba2390e69729669fDown in River Falls, Wisconsin covering the Kansas City Chiefs for a news outlet. Having a good time even if my beloved Twins continue their hokey-pokey ("You put your left foot in, you put left foot out") dance in the AL Central standings.

My favorite moment so far was asking longtime Chiefs center Casey Wiegmann for a quick quote and having him say, "I don't talk." I didn't want to point out that what Wiegmann did was an oxymoron, because I'm not about to appraoch large men tired from a day of sweating and smacking into one another with a word containing "m-o-r-o-n" in it, so I let it go.

Also tried to nab Tony Gonzalez, but he told me "No thanks. But thanks for asking."

Always the gentleman I guess.

Had a fascinating conversation with Priest Holmes, who at 5-9 is an inch shorter than me. I looked at his tiny frame as we talked and wondered how he can take a pounding like he did and not be crumpled up like a soda can for life. (Which almost happened to him back in Oct. 2005 vs. the Chargers). Priest is promising greatness with an inspirational, made-for-TV-movie type of comeback you only see in a Disney production. "Old man returns at 34, irks Larry Johnson's negotiation team to no end."

Yep, no sign of LJ yet. Hey, I'd hold out for $100 million too if I took the kind of a pounding he did last year. 416 carries?

The other thing that stands out being so close to NFL players is what giants some of these offensive linemen are. 6-6, 300 pounds is one thing on paper, but to stand next to one of them is downright freakish. It reminds me of when I once interviewed Shaq and realized during the interview that I only came up to his armpit.

All in all good fun but really busy.

And of course today had one of the offensive coaches doing what they always do during training camp - screaming so loud I could hear his voice when I exited my car in the stadium parking lot. He politely told the offensive players to get their heads of out their collective ... well, you know.

Anyway I'll be here through the end of camp doing reporting for a news outlet, and having a blast. There are a lot of KC area reporters & TV/Radio people here and everybody seems nice. Enjoying sharing media room space with some KC star guys who are hilarious. Check out their video of rookie Dwayne Bowe getting the ol' shrink wrapped to the goalpost rookie hazing bit.
